Last week, a team of seven United Brotherhood of Carpenters union members from our mattress factory attended a Leadership Conference at the UBC International Training Center in Las Vegas. These McRoskey employees work on the shop floor in all five manufacturing departments: sewing, innerspring, garnetting, box springs and mattress. While many do not work with wood per se, all McRoskey craftspeople are members of the United Brother of Carpenters and Joiners.
The million square foot ITC campus is truly amazing. Along with more than 300 guest rooms and full dining facilities, the training center is a series of large workshops, dozens of classrooms, flexible conference space and a tool museum. The Carpenters International Training Center is keeping union carpenters competitive–whatever the future may bring.
The McRoskey mattress makers took a weekend long course in leadership, with a focus on the fact that anyone can be a leader. They came back to the factory full of enthusiasm and ready to teach the rest of the team about leadership.
Here are some of their comments:
- Working not just for me but for the team.
- Changed how I think about my job
- What was learned can be used anywhere
- The importance of respect
- The importance of communication
- How can you help the next person?
- Listen
- Everyone can make a difference
We thank the United Brotherhood of Carpenters for giving our employees the opportunity to learn valuable life (and job) skills!
In addition to learning leadership skills, one of these men won $1000 on the way out of town at the airport…..
